![]() ![]() Meanwhile, Szhemi (now living in Clark's home in "Kansas") makes a breakthrough in finding Earth, leading to a terrible development. Now, we learn the Green Lantern, Hope, doesn't know anything about Green Lanterns because the previous bearer died before making introductions, and her ring is disconnected from the Corps network. A Green Lantern arrived to lend a hand when the battle reached a fevered pitch. When last we left Superman in his adventure far from home, he intercepted Max's band of mercenaries attacking New-Ark for resource mining. Yes, that sounds like a backhanded compliment, but with a maxi-series as troubled as this one, any praise is an improvement. Christopher Priest may be circling some semblance of a coherent plot with this issue, and the story's direction may be taking shape. Superman: Lost #5 takes Superman's lost years in space to dark places when he encounters a Green Lantern who isn't a Green Lantern, and Clark's memories of time away widen the rift between him and Lois. Using the ring's emotional connection to its target to conjure constructs of Bart's past heroic identities, Impulse and Kid Flash, Barry is almost successful in making his beloved grandson feel emotions again before he is tragically interrupted by his nemesis Professor Zoom.Cover art by: Lee Weeks, Elizabeth Breitweiser Barry manages to nearly convert his resurrected grandson, Bart Allen, from the influence of the Black Lanterns. After all, they had just both escaped death together. Thus Barry Allen's close friendship and deep emotional connection to Hal Jordan contributed to his immense power as a deputized Blue Lantern. As such, they are able to recharge Green Lantern rings and provide a valuable ally to their allies. The sheer driving force of hope makes the Blue Lanterns more powerful than their counterparts, but only if they are in close proximity to a green power ring. The Blue Lanterns power rings respond uniquely to their targets' specific psychosis, unlike the Green Lantern rings whose constructs are manifestations of their users' willpower. It's quite fitting for Barry, whose abilities allow him to literally outrun death and understanding of the Speed Force and time travel grant him a powerful source of hope. The Blue Lantern ring chooses none other than Barry Allen for his ability to instill hope in others. Ganthet explains that each power ring can deputize a non-corps member during the Blackest Night, according to their emotional connections to the ring's power. The rings have the ability to reanimate the dead to create evil but intelligent zombies, as well as convert people who have previously been resurrected, such as Superman and Wonder Woman.Īt one point, the Black Lantern rings seek to convert Barry Allen and Hal Jordan to its ranks, but Barry manages to time travel two seconds into the future to allow them both to escape the ring's clutches. As an army of the dead, the Black Lanterns represent the absence of all emotion and seek to eliminate life from the universe. The intermingling events of the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps series all led to DC's horror-heavy crossover limited series Blackest Night, in which all of the power ring corps found themselves facing the avatar of death itself, the dreaded Black Lantern Ganthet. This focus on the preciousness of life is a significant reason as to why Barry Allen was chosen as a member of the Corps. Unlike Oa, where the Guardians have constructed massive buildings to help the Green Lantern Corps police the galaxy, Ganthet and Sayd chose to keep Odym in a state of natural beauty in order to allow the living organisms there to flourish unharmed. The Blue Lanterns make their home on the planet Odym, where peace and love reign supreme. The new addition to the color spectrum would eventually aid the others in the oncoming War of Light and, subsequently, the apocalyptic event known as the Blackest Night. Named Ganthet and Sayd, the two beings explain that the prophecy of the Blackest Night is imminent and that they left the Green Lanterns to start their own Corps fueled by the emotion of hope. The Blue Lantern Corps was started by two Guardians, the ancient race of beings who created and rule over the Green Lantern Corps, who dissent from the group out of love for each other and concern for the fate of the galaxy. ![]()
